As we approach the gubernatorial election on August 15th, we note with concern the rising political tension between the APC and Accord and the threat that the situation is posing to the peace and security of Osun.The use of inflammatory language, destruction of billboards, disturbance of public peace and mobilization of thugs are early warning signs that we cannot ignore.
Since 2025 February following controversies on who occupies the local government secretariat between the APC and PDP (Accord) which led to the death of Remi Abass in Ikire, an atmosphere of threat to peace and security has been launched in Osun. Recently on Sunday 20th June, the life of innocent fourteen year old Ezekiel Olapade was cut down in ilobu, Irepodun local government following attack between APC and Accord. While both sides have been trading words since then, another violence was unleashed on Tuesday 24th June in Esa Oke which also claimed a life. The victim was reportedly shot dead in front of his father’s house. These incidents among many others have dominated the once peaceful atmosphere of Osun State.
Elections are not war. The mandate of the people is sacred and must not be drowned in violence, intimidation, or desperation. Both APC and Accord must call their supporters to order, dismantle armed groups, and commit publicly to a peaceful, issue-based campaign.
Osun has bled enough from political crises of the past. We cannot afford another cycle of bloodshed for power.
At this critical moment, our party, the African Democratic Congress, (ADC) stands as the credible alternative. ADC offers Osun a politics of ideas over insults, development over destruction, and security over strife. Our candidate, Rt. Hon. Najeem Salaam and the party structure are focused on rebuilding trust, restoring dignity to governance, and delivering security and jobs without playing devisive or violent politics.
We hereby call on the INEC, security agencies, traditional rulers, and civil society to act now to de-escalate the tension by calling the APC and Accord to order. Also, we call on Osun voters to reject violence, reject desperation and choose the path of peace and progress that the ADC is known and stands for. To us, the people of Osun deserve peace, not provocation.
