𝗔𝗣𝗖’𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵-𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝘆 𝗢𝗹𝘂𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲.

The chaos that erupted on Sunday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) North-East Consultative Meeting is not just a regional embarrassment it is a national warning. A party that cannot hold a simple internal meeting without descending into shouting matches and walkouts has no business seeking another four years of national leadership.

The trigger? A clumsy, top-down attempt to foist a premature endorsement of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 elections. No debate. No consensus. Just a staged endorsement attempt, shoved into the agenda like a foregone conclusion. The result was predictable: resistance, rebellion, and an ugly collapse of order.

This incident has also raised a more troubling possibility: that the APC North-East caucus may no longer be fully standing on the Tinubu-Shettima mandate. That is significant. This is the home zone of the Vice President Kashim Shettima himself yet even here, unity is crumbling. Whether due to dissatisfaction with performance, internal rivalries, or shifting political allegiances, the North-East is sending a clear message: automatic loyalty is no longer guaranteed.

This is not an isolated incident. It is a pattern.

The APC has become a party where internal democracy is a mirage and consultation is reduced to theatre. Whether it’s candidate selection or policy direction, the will of the grassroots is routinely ignored. The party has become a machine for elite preservation a platform for coronating incumbents and silencing dissent.

Let’s be honest: what the North-East meeting exposed is not just disunity, but arrogance. The kind of arrogance that assumes the electorate and even party members have no say in deciding who leads them. The kind of arrogance that plunges meetings into chaos rather than listen to alternative views. This is what APC has become: a party too rigid to change and too entitled to listen.

And it is failing Nigeria.

Under the APC, Nigerians have watched insecurity persist, inflation soar, and the cost of living break the backs of everyday citizens. The party has failed to unite its own ranks how then can it unite the nation?

The Tinubu-Shettima administration has not even reached the midpoint of its first term, yet we are already being force-fed a re-election narrative. Instead of focusing on delivering results, the APC is focused on entrenching itself. Instead of rebuilding the economy or healing national fractures, its priority is consolidating power.

The collapse of the North-East meeting is a symptom of a larger disease one of political decay, not just within the APC, but across the Nigerian political establishment. But it is within the APC that the rot is currently most visible.

For Nigerians watching from the sidelines, the message is clear: this is not a party ready to renew its mandate. It is a party unraveling under the weight of its own contradictions. And perhaps, just perhaps, even some within its own ranks are beginning to question whether the Tinubu-Shettima project should continue at all.

2027 is still some distance away. But we cannot wait until then to demand better. If this is how the APC governs itself, we should be deeply concerned about how it governs the country.

The time to hold this partyand all parties accountable is now. Before another round of promises leads us right back into chaos.
