Wasilat Azeez selected for MTN Nigeria’s maiden media fellowship

Wasilat Azeez, a journalist with TheCable, has been selected as one of the fellows for the first edition of MTN Nigeria‘s media innovation programme (MIP).
The MTN-MIP, run by the school of media and communication, Pan-Atlantic University (PAU), is a six-month fellowship for innovative storytellers and media leaders that will equip them with new skills needed to function in the rapidly changing media world.
The programme began on May 23, 2022, and will run until October 28, 2022.
Azeez, who holds a first-class honours bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos, began her journalism career as a graduate intern with The Cable Newspaper Journalism Foundation (CNJF) in 2020.
She covers business and finance.
She is also passionate about spotlighting women and persons with disabilities (PWDs), especially those who have made outstanding records in their respective fields by overcoming barriers and beating the odds to reach their goals.
Other fellows selected for the programme include Abidemi Dairo of Channels TV; Adeyemi Adepetun of The Guardian; Agbonkhese Oboh of Vanguard Newspapers; Ameh Ejekwonyilo of Premium Times; Chima Akwaja of Leadership and Damilola Fajinmi of Megalectrics Ltd.
Others are Daniel Adeyemi of TechCabal; Elsie Godwin, a digital content creator; Esther Ndu of Arise News; Mike Okwoche of TVC; Nahimah Ajikanle Nurudeen of AP News; Peter Oluka of TechEconomy.ng; Rasaq Ayinla of Business Day and Sakina Ahmed of Fombina FM.
The rest are Samson Akintaro of Nairametrics; Temitayo Jaiyeola of PUNCH Newspapers; Ugo Unwuaso of Nigeria Communications Week, Uhuotu Omilabu of Inspiration FM and Vanessa Obioha of THISDAY.
The MIP fellows will engage in intensive sessions on courses covering creativity & innovation, entrepreneurship and management principles, subscription business, and strategic planning skills.
The fellows will also embark on a study trip to the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, to study the media business, pan-Africanism as well as visit Y’ello Innovation Centre, the South African high commission, amongst others.
According to the organisers, the fellows were selected based on performance from a written test and statement of purpose (SOP) submissions from over 1,200 applications.
