A terror kingpin, Rashid Oko Ilu who bragged on viral video to sustain Governor Gboyega Oyetola through violence and who for years have been harassing Ede town, has been arrested after fatal gun duel with the police.
The Timi of Ede had escaped assassination by hoodlums after timely police intervention while terror kingpin had implicated the state governor and Asiri Eniba, the NURTW terror chief.
Oko ilu who was declared wanted by the police three months ago only to resurface before the election as an ally of Asiri Eniba vowed in the video to attack the Ede monarch and make town ungovernable.
The notorious thug who in the video charged both Oyetola and Asiri Eniba not to leave government after defeat had made true his vow by launching sporadic gun attacks across Ede in the last few days, maiming the innocents and creating pandemonium in various parts of the town.
The heart of the town where the Monarch palace was located was the focus of the attacks, raising tension and apprehension of possible attempt to kill or kidnap the traditional ruler.
Top leaders of the People’s Democratic Party in the town were also targeted with some APC Members actively leading the hoodlums to identify the residence and homes of PDP leaders.
Oko Ilu who gleefully described himself as a killer in the video were on their nefarious gun and matchet attacks on those who voted against Oyetola when police anti-terror squad were mobilised in response to distress calls from the palace and victims.
The immediate mobilisation of police anti- terror squad in response to SOS from the town was again confronted by the band members of Oko Ilu who had laid siege on the central part of the town.
According to eye witnesses, police superior firepower however subdued the hoodlums with some of them gunned down while others were allegedly shielded by some APC leaders in the town.
Rather than surrendering to the police , Oko Ilu was reported to have sustained gun attacks on the police team from his hideout in the house of an APC chieftain.
An eye witness noted that the terror leader eventually ran out of bullet and was arrested and whisked to the police headquarters at Osogbo.
Jubilation erupted in the town as residents heaved sigh of relief over the eventual arrest and dismantling of Oko Ilu gang.
A community leader who witnessed it all narrated as follows: ” I want to thank the police authorities and their gallant men and women for a great job. Ede was locked down by Rashidi. Before election, he listed wards where we should not vote except we are ready to vote for Oyetola. Police protected us then.
” After election, he did that video. We were all afraid for our lives. His boys were going round the town with AK47. They actually wanted to kill our King. The police came on time to rescue us.
” We however want to warn that Oko ilu should not be released. Ede town will not accept such. He should answer for his many crimes of the last few years. Police authorities should also investigate and arrest his collaborators especially those APC leaders who aided their terror operations”, the community leader stated.
